Date: 17 September 2016
Time: 10:00 - 16:00
Location: Norfolk HES Offices, Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse Union House , NR20 4DR
The Brecks contain a wonderful variety of archaeological sites. Many of these are visible from the air. Archaeologists use both recent and historic aerial photographs, and new techniques such as lidar (a type of airborne laser scanning of the ground surface), to discover new sites, map and understand them, and contribute to their future protection.
This day school will introduce participants to the techniques of aerial survey and interpretation. It will focus on the archaeology of the Breckland region, and the results of the 'Brecks from Above' air photo mapping project. It will include presentations by specialist air photo interpreters, and a chance to undertake practical exercises such as rectifying photographs, mapping sites, and identifying archaeological and non-archaeological features on digital sources such as Google Earth. Participants will also be provided with guidance for undertaking their own research projects.
The day school is open to anyone with an interest in the subject. It is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Norfolk County Council. Book your place here www.eventbrite.com/e/brecks-from-above-day-school-using-aerial-photographs-for-archaeology-tickets-26465543152
